Top Five Ways to Spend Memorial Day in Savannah

Published May 24, 2017

It’s that time of year again, the day of remembrance for the sacrifice of the many souls who died fighting for our freedom. Since Savannah has sent sons( and some unknown daughters) to fight in every conflict our Nation has fought in, it is a day full of ceremonies. Locals even fought in little known Colonial wars with the Spanish, before United States was even born.

With school being out, and it being the kickoff of Tybee’s Beach Season; there are a lot of activities to choose from. The following five are my personal favorite. Keep in mind I’m a history buff. 🙂

Top Five Ways to Spend Memorial Day in Savannah | Savannah Dream Vacations

Number One: Wormsloe’s War of Jenkins Ear event.

This fun family affair is educational and entertaining. Georgia Colonial soldiers from our area waged war with the Spanish in our area over territory. One of those battles was Jenkins Ear. To learn more you must attend. Wormsloe’s plantation alone is worth checking out. A three day affair  that includes civil war demonstrations, black powder cannon and musket firing, even a walking tour of the property. It starts at 9am with a short presentation at the visitor’s center followed by a walking tour. It lasts until 4pm on  Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the 26th-28th Get more information here: http://www.gastateparks.org/Wormsloe

Number Two: The Bugfest at the Savannah Children’s Museum. This affair is not for the squeamish, but kids of all ages will love it!  It takes place at the Children’s Museum at 655 Louisville Road on Saturday, May 27th from 12:00-2:00pm. With bug themed crafts, lectures on bees and other pollinators, interactive activities with native insects  and even bug yoga! Come wear the kids out then hop over to the Visitors center and catch a trolley tour with Old Savannah tours. There will even be a food truck outside! For more information about this kid friendly  fest just call the Savannah Children’s Museum at (912) 651-4292 or go to: http://www.chsgeorgia.org/scm

Number Three: The Crawl of the South.

If you don’t have the kids with you or only have fur babies, this is the go to party of the whole weekend. The largest pub crawl in the South for the past two years, prepare to bar hop with up to 5,000 of your new friends. This whole thing started as an attempt to break a Guinness record. Though unsuccessful they only fell short of the goal by as little as 500 people the past two attempts, and I say the third time’s the charm! To participate in this festive event be at Congress Social Club at 2pm with your $20 entry fee, then you have the next 8 hours to drink one drink at minimum in at least ten to twenty participating bars and if you do, you get a t-shirt.  Ending with an after party at Savannah Smiles dueling piano bar, this is a great time. * Local tip, many of these bars do sell food, so call ahead in order to go the distance.

Number Four: The Annual Armed Forces Festival.

This weekend long gathering takes place in Rousakis Plaza at 115 East River St. This is very affordable as it is free and open to the public. Featuring arts, crafts, demonstration by the Coast guard and others, along with Patriotic entertainment all day long starts Friday, the 26th, at noon-11pm. The fun begins again on Saturday  from 10am-11pm, and then winds down Sunday, opening at 10am- ending at 6pm. Very near to other must see attractions and restaurants , it is worth it. Proceeds from  sales at this event go to the Georgia National Guard Family Support Foundation. For more information about the event call (912) 234-0295
